The goal of the Summer Mathematics / Science Institute (SMSI) is to provide professional development
workshops for Professional Development Schools' (PDS) mathematics and science teachers in content,
pedagogy and instructional technology. This summer, a two-week Mathematics
Institute was held from July 11-22 for Middle School Teachers. The
institute was facilitated by Ms. Latasha Thompson and Mr. Christian
Anderson, doctoral students of the Mathematics Education program at Morgan
State University.
A high school Mathematics Institute was also held from July 11-15.
This one week intensive institute was facilitated by Ms. Roni Ellington,
an Associate Professor at Morgan State University and doctoral student of Mathematics
Education at the University of Maryland, College Park.

This year's Science institute was held from July 18-22, and was facilitated by Ms. Lois Waters
and Mr. Rommel Miranda, doctoral students of Science Education at Morgan State University.
Teachers were exposed to technological connections in Science Education and an intensive compilation of lesson plans,
activities, teacher/student resources and websites was made and distributed.
Dr. Asamoah Nkwanta, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Dr. Dwayne Hill,
Associate Professor of Biology both of Morgan State University,
facilitated a one-week workshop - Applications for connecting Biology and
Mathematics in the Classroom. The workshop entitled: Discrete Mathematics
and Applications of RNA Sequences in the Classroom, was held from July 11-15.
Teachers were engaged in hands-on mathematics and science
activities designed to support their classroom instruction. In addition, they were required to develop
and complete special projects that consisted of developing lesson plans using PowerPoint. These lesson plans were connected
to the mathematics or science curriculum from which they teach.
A total of 70 teachers benefited from these Summer Institutes. Teachers completed
an evaluation questionnaire of the institutes and rated the institutes on a scale of 1 (poor) -5 (excellent).
Ninety-five (95%) of the participants rated the Institutes 4 or 5 in the following areas:
-
Clarity of objectives
-
Accomplishments of objectives
-
Materials and resources
-
Assigned activities
-
Practicality of the workshop
-
Provided new learning experiences
-
Relevant to participants' needs
-
Adequacy of facilities
