Professional Development for Teachers


CEMSE offers a variety of professional development activities designed to enhance the teaching skills of teachers and assist them in achieving certification. The following are a list of professional development activities provided by CEMSE:

Monthly Brown Bag Seminars


   The CEMSE sponsors monthly Brown Bag Research Seminars that are normally held on the third Thursday of the month. The purpose of Brown Bag Research Seminars is to share and discuss issues concerning science and mathematics teaching, higher education and related research topics. Invited guests include faculty from the School of Education and Urban Studies, graduate students and faculty form other departments.

Partnerships and Collaborations

The CEMSE has developed partnerships and collaborations with area schools that support the professional development of teachers and academic enrichment for students. Collaborative efforts include proposal development and evaluation, tutoring and mentoring, academic enrichment workshops, awards recognition in mathematics and science for students, SAT preparation and assistance with required state standardized tests. CEMSE has partnered with the Professional Development Schools (PDS) project, the National Board for Professional Development Schools (PDS) project, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), the Estuarine Research Center, regional schools and school systems.

Annual Mathematics and Science Education Conference

The Annual Mathematics and Science Education Conference is held on the second Saturday of December. The purpose is of the conference is to enhance teacher effectiveness in the teaching of mathematics and science. In a workshop format, the conference addresses current issues in mathematics, science and technlogy as well as, topics of interests across all levels of the educational spectrum.
Professionals in education are involved in hands-on / minds-on activities and develop meaningful connections between science, mathematics, technology and content/pedagogy.

The Morgan State University Annual Science-Mathematics-Engineering Fair

For over twenty-years, the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science (CEMSE) has organized and hosted the Annual Science-Mathematics-Engineering Fair for Baltimore area elementary, middle and high schools. The goals of the Fair include:
  • Providing opportunities for students to have practical research experiences in developing quality science-mathematics-engineering research projects.
  • Improving the scientific and technology literacy skills of student participants and their teachers.
  • Encouraging promising and creative students to pursue science, mathematics and engineering (SME) careers.
  • Providing an opportunity for students to interact with SME professionals.
  • Providing an opportunity for elementary school students to exhibit (but not compete) their research projects and receive recognition ("Winners Corner").
  • Providing high school students wih an opportunity to advance and compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
  • Providing students in grades 5-8 an opportunity to advance and compete in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge.
