Digital Edge Projects
The Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE)
has worked closely with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
(NBPTS) with the Digital Edge Technology Project. The Digital Edge Technology
Project is a special project in which Morgan State University is a partner institution
along with California State University, George Mason University, and Louisiana Tech
University. Seventeen (17) teachers from the Baltimore City Public School System
(through Coppin State University) participated in a three-hour workshop in which they
were introduced to the, "Digital Edge Learning Interchange" website at http://aliapple.com/deli.
Teachers visited the website and reviewed accomplished teaching video exhibit lessons produced
by National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT).
Teachers specifically reflected on two reading video exhibits: "Poetry Sings" and
"Around the World with Cinderella". They also reflected on the assessments, resources,
content standards and overall teaching strategies used in the lesson. Teachers commented on
how useful the website is and how they would like to make video exhibits of their lessons to
reflect on their teaching. Teachers completed a project evaluation research survey as a part of the workshop.
Morgan state University Pre-Service elementary teachers enrolled in ELED 478 Integrative Methods of
Teaching Mathematics and Science used the Digital Edge exhibits "Surfing the Solar System" and "Foster's
Fantastic Frog Pond" to determine the characteristics of exemplary science lessons. Students reflected
on the goals, prerequisite skills, content standards, teaching strategies and assessments used in the lessons.
The students completed an Exemplary Activity Checklist and responded to their observation of the integration of
mathematics and science in the lessons.
