Senior Comprehensive Examination

General Test Information

The senior comprehensive examination is offered by the Department of Biology three times during the academic year and is open to all junior and senior level students. Students are strongly encouraged to take the examination seriously and to prepare for this exam with the understanding they must PASS the examination with an overall score of 70%. BIOLOGY MAJORS WILL NOT GRADUATE WITHOUT PASSING THIS EXAM.

To assist the students with preparing for the exam, the Biology department offers in class review sessions prior to the Fall and Late Spring sessions of the exam. The Early Spring session of the exam does not have an in-class review session. The exact dates for these review sessions will be posted on the announcement board for this web site, and will also be posted around the Department of Biology prior to the sessions. In general, review sessions are held on 5 consecutive Tuesdays at 5:00 pm. Each Tuesday review is moderated by the faculty members who teach and generate the questions for a particular subject area of the exam. Students should review the subject material PRIOR to the review session, and come to the session with specific questions and topics that they wish to be discussed.

Exam Subject Areas and Pertinent Information

The senior comprehensive examination covers the following topic areas:

  • Ecology
  • Genetics
  • Developmental Biology
  • Organismic Biology
  • Cell and Molecular Biology

This examination is a two and a half hour exam, with 125 questions, and is given 3 times per academic year.

Students must pre-register EACH TIME they intend to take this examination.

Students must show a photo ID to be admitted to the test. Test admission is 30 minutes prior to the examination. Once the examination has started, students may NOT enter the exam.

Students may not bring any material with them to the exam other than sharpened pencils and photo ID. Scratch paper will be provided.

In order to pass this examination, students must score an overall grade of 70%.

Within a single academic year, students who failed the examination are not required to retake the individual sections of the examination where they score 70% or higher. They may elect to ONLY take the sections in which the score was less than 70%. This option, however, is only available within one academic year. Scores do not role over into the following academic year.

While students may not review actual questions after the examination, they may ask for a breakdown of quantitative scores for each section.
